Nvidia CEO Says $30 Billion OpenAI Investment May Be the Last Ahead of Possible IPO
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said on March 4 that the company's recent $30 billion investment in OpenAI "might be the last" time it invests in the ChatGPT creator, as OpenAI is expected to pursue a public listing later this year.
Huang said the possibility of investing as much as $100 billion in OpenAI is "probably not in the cards" given OpenAI's move toward an initial public offering. He also signaled that similar large private investments in companies such as Anthropic may be winding down.
The comments suggest Nvidia expects fewer opportunities for very large private equity stakes in leading AI startups once those companies become publicly traded.
Jensen Huang said the $30 billion investment in OpenAI "might be the last" time Nvidia invests in the company, because OpenAI plans to go public.
When a company goes public, new funding typically comes from public markets rather than private strategic investors, which reduces opportunities for big private investments like Nvidia's $30 billion stake.
Huang indicated that similar large private investments in firms such as Anthropic may also be winding down, but he did not say Nvidia will stop all investments.
