Amazon to Acquire Globalstar in $11.57 Billion Deal to Expand Satellite Network
Amazon.com has agreed to buy satellite telecom company Globalstar in a deal valued at $11.57 billion, according to company statements and reports cited by Bloomberg News. The acquisition gives Amazon a bigger foothold in the satellite market as it builds out its own low Earth orbit business, Amazon Leo.
Under the merger agreement, Globalstar will help Amazon Leo add direct-to-device services, which are designed to let phones and other devices connect through satellites when they are outside the reach of traditional cell networks. The move also positions Amazon to compete more directly with SpaceX’s Starlink.
Globalstar shares jumped after the reports and the deal announcement, reflecting investor reaction to the takeover news.
