Tesla is developing an all-new smaller, lower-cost electric SUV, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Reuters. The vehicle is said to be a new model, not a version of the company’s current Model 3 or Model Y.
The automaker has reportedly contacted suppliers in recent weeks to discuss details of the compact SUV. The plan comes as Tesla looks to revive efforts to bring a more affordable electric vehicle to market after a long period without a major new product launch.
The report drew attention because Tesla’s stock has been under pressure, and investors see a cheaper model as a possible way to boost sales volume and help slow demand. At the same time, some investors said a lower-priced vehicle could add pressure to already thin profit margins.
