NYCB Earnings Highlights and 2024 Guidance

In 2023, NYCB crossed an important threshold, growing to over $100 billion in assets and shifting to a larger bank category. The year brought a significant diversification in the balance sheet, with $2.3 billion in net income and a $3.24 EPS. However, the fourth quarter saw a net loss of $252 million due to a $552 million provision for credit losses and actions to address weaknesses in the office sector and multifamily portfolio repricing risk, increasing reserves by $774 million. Total loans grew by $624 million to $84.6 billion, but deposits slightly decreased to $81.4 billion. Expenses were cut by $28 million to $557 million for the quarter. Looking ahead to 2024, guidance includes a total loan decline of 3-5%, a 3-5% deposit increase, $7.5 billion more in cash and securities, and a 2.4-2.5% net interest margin. Noninterest income is forecasted at $570-$620 million with operating expenses between $2.3-$2.4 billion. The CET1 capital ratio target is 10% by end of 2024, with an anticipated 22% tax rate.
