Qudian Inc. is a Chinese consumer finance company. It builds online tools that help individuals get short-term credit and installment financing, often for everyday purchases or personal spending needs. The company sits between borrowers and funding partners, and in some cases it also lends from its own balance sheet. Its main customers are consumers who want quick access to credit, along with merchants and financial institutions that use Qudian’s platform to originate or fund loans. Qudian makes money by charging loan facilitation, servicing, and related fees, and by earning interest or other income on loans it holds itself. In simple terms, it is a technology-driven middleman in consumer lending. What makes the business different is that it is not a traditional bank with branches and deposits. It uses software, data checks, and online distribution to approve and arrange small loans at scale, then hands much of the funding or credit exposure to partner institutions. That makes Qudian more of a credit marketplace and loan service provider than a full-service lender.
