AFK Sistema is a Russian investment holding company. It does not sell one main product itself; instead, it owns stakes in businesses across telecom, healthcare, forestry, agriculture, retail, real estate, and technology. Its best-known asset is a large stake in MTS, the telecom group, along with other operating companies such as medical, timber, and consumer businesses. The company makes money mainly from the businesses it owns. That includes dividends from portfolio companies, gains when it sells assets, and returns from helping build and finance those businesses over time. Some subsidiaries also earn direct operating revenue from their own customers, while Sistema benefits as the owner. What makes Sistema different is that it acts like a capital allocator rather than a single-industry operator. It buys, develops, and sometimes restructures businesses, then tries to increase their value through ownership and management.
