Record revenue: Eagle Materials reported first-quarter revenue of $651 million, up 3% year over year, with EPS of $3.29 and gross margin of 24.8%.
Higher costs weighed on profit: EPS fell 13% as higher freight, raw materials, and an unexpected equipment failure at Mountain Cement pressured earnings; the company said some of that impact should be recoverable through insurance.
Demand stayed solid: Heavy Materials benefited from public infrastructure spending and data center-related construction, while Wallboard demand held up better than expected despite weak housing.
Pricing mixed: Cement gross pricing was up about 1% year over year, but net pricing was down 2% because freight rose sharply; Wallboard also saw a June 1 price increase driven mainly by freight.
Capex cycle continues: Eagle is still investing heavily in the Laramie cement and Duke wallboard modernization projects, with fiscal 2027 capital expenditures expected to be $490 million to $525 million.
Capital returns remain active: The company returned $92 million to shareholders in the quarter through dividends and buybacks, and management said it will keep balancing repurchases, organic investment, and M&A.
