Economic Moat

Gap has no economic moat

Customers can switch easily because many retailers sell similar clothing, and buying from Gap does not lock them into a service or system. Its recognizable brands do not by themselves prevent rivals from offering alternatives or ensure shoppers will pay more, and the market is open to many sellers.

Why Gap has no moat

Easy to shop elsewhere

Customers can move between Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta and competing apparel, discount, department-store, or online retailers without losing data, training, or service reliability.

Recognition is not enough

Gap’s brands are widely recognized, but recognition alone does not show that customers will pay more for similar clothes or that rivals cannot attract them with different products or prices.

Many sellers can compete

Gap competes across apparel categories with local, national, global, and digital retailers, and the company describes the industry as having low barriers to entry rather than a market that can support only a few sellers.
