Economic Moat

SLB has a narrow economic moat

Protected technology makes SLB’s specialized tools difficult to copy, while software embedded in customers’ daily work makes replacing it costly and disruptive. These protections are strongest in demanding technical jobs and established software installations, rather than across every service SLB sells.

What protects SLB from competitors

Intangible Assets

SLB’s patents and trade secrets prevent rivals from freely copying important parts of its specialized equipment and software. Its Ora reservoir-testing tools, for example, use patented fluid-handling technology to collect underground fluid samples under difficult conditions, giving customers a reason to choose more than the cheapest provider.

High Switching Costs

Customers use Petrel and Delfi to connect underground reservoir models, shared data and engineering work, supported by SLB’s software training. This creates a practical barrier to switching: moving to another provider means retraining staff, transferring models and checking that established work still produces reliable results.
