Economic Moat

Relx has a narrow economic moat

Protected research content and tools built into customers’ daily work make RELX difficult to replace. Its fraud-detection services also improve as participating businesses share information, giving smaller rivals less evidence to work with. These barriers protect parts of the business rather than keeping competitors out of every market.

What protects Relx from competitors

High Switching Costs

LexisNexis risk tools connect directly to customers’ systems for checking identities, detecting fraud and making insurance decisions. Replacing them can require rebuilding connections and testing replacement tools, making a cheaper rival less attractive when reliability matters.

Intangible Assets

Copyrights and licensing agreements protect Elsevier’s research publications and LexisNexis’s owned legal commentary and reference material. Rivals cannot simply copy this content, so an alternative service may not replace the specific material customers need.

Network Effects

Businesses using ThreatMetrix contribute transaction signals and fraud feedback that help other participants recognize suspicious activity and genuine customers. More contributing businesses improve the shared evidence available to each customer, which a rival with fewer contributors cannot easily match.
