Amazon has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Perplexity AI, a startup known for its AI-powered search tools. The conflict centers around Comet, Perplexity's browser-based shopping assistant, which allows users to make purchases from Amazon.com through automated AI actions.
Amazon claims that Comet violated its terms of service by making purchases on behalf of users without identifying itself as an automated agent. Amazon's rules prohibit the use of bots or automated tools for shopping or data collection on its platform.
Both companies confirmed the legal dispute on Tuesday. Perplexity AI described Amazon's actions as 'bullying,' while Amazon insists that using AI agents in this way constitutes computer fraud and a breach of its retail site policies.
